Tips for Walking the Golf Course Pt. 1
This is the first in a series on walking the golf course. In this article we’ll address what TO use to make walking the course and carrying your own clubs more enjoyable. In the next installment, we’ll talk about some things NOT to do.

First things first, you will need a good pair of shoes. A golfer walks five or more miles in an average 18-hole round of golf.
With the ‘dogs’ taken care of, now let’s help the back and legs and shoulders by lightening the load. First order of business is to have a lightweight golf bag. Not only will the light weight come in handy but a good carry bag is built to be carried and thus has some of the creature comforts such as hip pads and comfortable dual shoulder straps. And while you’re at it, make sure that lightweight carry bag is a stand bag so you don’t have to bend down to pick it up between shots.
What you put in this lightweight carry bag makes a huge difference. Carry only the clubs, balls, tees and accessories you will need on this round. How many balls will you need – three, four, six, eight,…? (For sure, you don’t need those dozen shags but now we’re tipping into what NOT to carry.)
Additional items you will want TO carry when walking the course include: water, energy bar, sunblock and a packable rainsuit. Staying hydrated is always important and across four plus hours and 5 plus miles, you’re going to need some fluids. Also, you’re going to burn 1,200 – 1,500 calories walking 18-holes so bring along a pb&j or an energy bar to keep your energy up. We’ve all learned our lesson regarding the dangers of sunburn, right? So, pack some sunblock and remember your lips. If rain is a possibility toss in a lightweight and packable rain suit but if it’s a blue-bird day, leave it in the trunk or locker.
Enjoy the walk!
